The week of September 15th will see three important meetings for island governance.

COA Advisory Board Meeting

Monday (September 16) Beaver Island COA Advisory Committee will meet at 10:00 a.m. upstairs in Carol’s Hangout at the BIC Center. At township meetings County Commissioner Nancy Ferguson said one topic at the meeting will be an effort to implement the snow removal program for seniors. This was tried last year, but it did not work either on the island or on the mainland, apparently for lack of bids to do the work. Additional information on the COA is here.

Marijuana Ordinance Forum

Monday evening at 7:00 at the BIC Center, the Peaine and St. James Planning Commissions have a one-time event planned to provide information and collect input on marijuana ordinance options under the new state law. Among the items on the agenda:

  • You’ll learn more about Michigan’s three laws governing marijuana as well as new laws around industrial hemp;
  • Review the meaning of ‘opt in’ and ‘opt out’ in the laws and how those choices relate to local ordinances; and
  • provide input to the Planning Commissions as part of a facilitated input session with all attendees.

The session will be facilitated by Lindsey Gardner and Mary Reilly, Government and Public Policy Educators, Michigan State University Extension. Light refreshments will be served.

Peaine Township Recreation Plan Hearing

Tuesday evening, the Peaine Township Planning Commission will hold a hearing on the near-final draft of the Peaine Township Recreation Plan. The plan has been in the works for some time and this meeting will be the last opportunity for input on it before it is finally adopted. The meeting is at the Peaine Township hall at 7:00 p.m. The current draft of the plan is here. Comments received on it (consolidated by Krys Lyle) are here.

Charlevoix Ferry Dock Survey

The City of Charlevoix is collecting comments on proposals to revamp or relocate the Beaver Island Ferry dock. The remaining proposals now include relocations to Ferry Beach or a location just north of the current St. Mary’s Cement plant dock. The other alternative is to revamp and update the current location. You can have a look at the very proposals and find the link to the survey on the here on the Charlevoix City Website. The survey closes on September 22.

County Parks Plan Survey & Meeting

The County of Charlevoix is conducting a survey to guide the development of its recreation plan. You can complete the survey online here. In addition to the survey they have, at the request of a number of folks on the island, decided to add a public input session on the island. It will be on September 26 with the time and location to be announced.

Transportation Authority Survey

The county transportation authority is also conducting a survey. Forms are at the BIC Center. Check in the box under the brochure display on the left wall of the Welcome Center or ask at the front desk.
