Discover Beaver Island planning group held their monthly meeting November 13th. There was good turnout. Plans for a Local First Small Business Saturday on December 7th were discussed. So far, the hardware, shipwreck shirts and the BIC Center are planning special events for that date. Santa at the hardware, Christmas movies at the BIC center with an indoor tree lighting, and possibly an outdoor tree lighting with some caroling just after dusk that evening. Expanding the annual Fishing Tournament to a more full-throated Winter Carnival was discussed—with events in town and out at Lake G. There was considerable interest in that idea, and a working group is already busy with that. Also discussed was a Fat Tire biking event—a race—either in May or the Fall. With all of the NEA Big Read events on the table for May, a view developed that something in the Fall Color season might be the better plan—and allow more time for planning. A working group was formed to explore the idea. Also discussed was work on getting a Dark Sky brochure together along with work on a dark sky park designation. Another group agreed to work on those projects. If you are interested in working on any of these projects or have an idea for something else, Chamber Director Paul Cole would be glad to hear from you. Reach him by email using chamber at beaverisland.org.
