At their monthly business meeting on Monday, November 9th, the Beaver Island Community School board of education met to reconfirm the district’s COVID-19 Extended Learning Plan and receive the monthly report on student attendance. Beaver Island has been able to conduct face-to-face classes since the beginning of the school year and the board voted to continue with instruction as planned. Attendance has been excellent this year, with a daily average of 95% of all students in attendance. In other business, the board approved the hiring of Levi Connor, Simple Life Tree Care, LLC, as the school’s snow plowing contractor for the 20-21 winter. The board also discussed the election and some transitions on the school board. Congratulations to Brian Cole, newly elected board member, and the incumbent board members who were re-elected to the board, including Mark Engelsman, Angel LeFevre-Welke, Erin Randall, Rick Speck, and Andy Stebbins. Ryann Turner chose not to run for re-election, and her term will expire in January. Vicki Smith, the BICS school board president, was elected to serve as the Peaine Township Treasurer. Unfortunately, Vicki will have to step down from the board so that she can take the oath of office at Peaine Township. The leadership and work provided by Ryann and Vicki over the years is greatly appreciated and will be deeply missed.
Wil Cwikiel is the Superintendent and Principal of Beaver Island Community School and a BIA Board Member.
